Inspired by her activism and her interest in authentic representation, Montréal-based photographer Lian Benoit finds purpose in capturing the emotionality and complexity of her subjects, often relating to the existential issues present within youth culture. “In my personal work, I often capture subjects with a contemplative look in their eyes,” she says. “This expression symbolizes the struggle of modern youth, caught between the weight of personal, political, environmental and other issues as well as the distractions of daily life.” With a degree in graphic design from Montréal-based Concordia University, Benoit first entered the industry working for agencies like Sid Lee and Tux Creative Agency, but in 2019, she discovered that she resonated most with photography while developing visual assets for identities. “The hands-on, dynamic nature of freelance life and the fast-paced environment of production work were particularly appealing,” Benoit recalls. “This newfound love for photography, combined with my background in design, enabled me to see the world through a unique lens and pursue a career that truly excites and inspires me.” Attributing her strong sense of composition to the mentorships she found at design studios and on-the-job experience with informing her understanding of lighting and retouching, she now explores themes of diversity with an empathy-led approach. “In my practice as an image maker, I lead with empathy as a driving force in every project I undertake, whether personal or commissioned,” Benoit states. “A fusion of emotional depth and graphic precision sets my work apart.”
