“When I was a kid, the monsters in horror movies often didn’t appear until the third act. In the film Se7en, I wanted to introduce the killer in the titles. I asked director David Fincher if I could look at all the props, and I discovered a couple of prop notebooks with obsessive writing in them. I thought it would be good to do a tabletop shoot, as though it was John Doe’s day job to prepare the notebooks to document his crimes and justify his existence. The crawl roll was done with fish hooks and razor blades going through the roll-up machine backward.”
