Duration: Five years.

Location: Zurich, Switzerland.

Approach: I make collages out of pictures, shapes and colors. It‘s all about playing with the pieces, taking little details and overlaying them to create a new image. Abstract forms combine with everyday imagery taken out of context and a smart use of space, colors and classic typography. I work a lot by hand and often design decisions are made directly during the printing process. Design is very much part of the printing process and the printing process is very much part of design.

Influences: I'm inspired by the way music layered with different ideas from different people. I work this way too. As a child, I studied my father’s record collection, album covers of the 1960s and 1970s featuring acid-burned pop surrealism and post-modernist work of artists such as Hipgnosis, Neon Park, Andy Warhol, etc.

I later discovered, through my own music collection, artists such as Raymond Pettibon, Lawrence Weiner and record sleeves created by Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis for Wire. And of course from music posters, the work of Sonnenzimmer and Damien Tran, to name a few. Besides the music graphics I am also very influenced by Swiss graphic design. There’s a big history here in Zurich.

Work environment: I work in a 30-square-meter studio in a building shared by a community of graphic designers, illustrators, programmers and architects. I have a screen-printing kit set up, but it’s currently in storage because of the high rents in Zurich. I sometimes work under the title Comet Substance, and more recently, Sunset Studio with my partner, Natalie Rickert.
