Remains of Munitions Past.' The United States Government says more than 15 million acres in the US are contaminated with unexploded and discarded military munitions, or munitions constituents. A research project at the University of Missouri has finished testing an inexpensive method to apply pollution-eating enzymes to these contaminants. This series was photographed at the Weldon Springs Ordinance Works, just west of St. Louis, which opened before America's entry into World War II. During the conflict, the facility produced millions of pounds of TNT and DNT.
