With figures from activist Margarida Maria Alves to artist Tomie Ohtake to Dr. Rita Lobato Velho Lopes, women have made huge contributions to the history of Brazil. Yet, only 16 percent of the streets in Sao Paulo are named after women. Created by ad agency FCB Brasil and digital design firm Brave, this site marks the first part of an initiative to bring more visibility to the achievements of Brazilian women. Based on the design of the city’s street signs, the site features a modular style similar to a catalog, featuring women’s names, stories and images. FCB Brasil and Brave created an additional image layer to dramatically colorize each uploaded image, creating a consistent visual language throughout the site. Visitors were encouraged to nominate and vote on the women that deserve to be honored by Sao Paulo; the agencies then compiled a list based on votes and sent it to Sao Paulo’s council members for consideration.
The site is built on the WordPress CMS with additional PHP, and uses the Advanced Custom Fields plugin and Backbone.js. The site features more than 300 nominated women and more than 500 images. Since its launch, the site has received more than 900,000 visitors.
