Bright saturation and primary colors mark the tongue-in-cheek tone of this Italian photographer. His images require a double take—what seems at first glance to be a hand pinching a stocking is, in fact, a wrench. Mixing everyday objects with a “dose of ambiguity,” Maurizio Di Iorio reveals a clever streak earned from more than a decade of copywriting. Back in those days, he realized he needed a change when, after campaign meetings, “the only things that remained in my head were the images.” So he bought his first camera. That was in 2009. Now, Di Iorio shoots fashion campaigns for Marc by Marc Jacobs and Cassina, and his images pop up in such publications as GQ, Refinery29, Wallpaper* and Bloomberg Newsweek. With mostly American clients, he imagines a move stateside in the future. For now, Di Iorio perfects his signature look at his studio in his large home in central Italy. His advice? “Find a recognizable style, then do anything to stay consistent.”
