Location: New York, New York, and www.johnhendrix.com.
Duration: Three years.
Staff: One.
Education: BFA in design and illustration from The University of Kansas. Rock-Chalk. Several years working in the world of corporate design. Hard-Knocks. MFA in Illustration from School of Visual Arts, New York. Life-Rocks.
Cultural Influences: Some of the artists I have adored and shamelessly copied—Winsor McCay, Lizbeth Zwerger, Chris Ware, Robert Lawson, Jack Unruh, Barry Fitzgerald, N.C. Wyeth, Tim Bower, Ben Edlund, Tex Avery, Arthur Rackham, Alan Cober, Grant Wood, Bill Watterson. Favorite Film—"right" answer: Rear Window; actual answer: Raiders of the Lost Ark. A true pleasure—singing old hymns; an embarrassing pleasure—The Gilmore Girls.
Environment: My studio space is in a beautifully average building in the Fashion District of Manhattan. The best part of the little dungeon is my wonderful studio-mates, Yuko Shimizu and Katie Yamasaki, both incredible artists and even better friends.
Philosophy: Be continuously grateful. Humble yourself by recklessly admiring the work of your elders and peers. If you get a laugh out of one of your own drawings, you are having a good day.
