"Jeff Widener now lives in Hawaii and came to California for this portrait. He was working for the Associated Press and covering the events in Tiananmen Square when he made this photograph. The image was taken from the sixth floor of the Beijing Hotel with a telephoto lens. When I asked him about the photo, he told me that he had the line of tanks perfectly lined up in the viewfinder and was about to shoot when he saw a man walk into his frame. 'I was thinking to myself, get out of my shot, this guy is going to mess up this photo.' Now, as we all know, the man was the photo. This portrait of Jeff was shot in my San Diego studio, Wisner 20x24 camera, with the help of Luis Garcia."
