Location: Portland, Oregon, New York City and www.dylancoulter.com.
Duration: I've been shooting professionally for three and a half years.
Staff: I'm the only full-time person, but I have an amazing group of talented people that I work with regularly, depending on the project.
Education: Technically, I'm self-taught, I have no formal training in photography, but I did have an amazing informal education. Before shooting, I was an art director in advertising and had the opportunity to work with many great shooters. Not only did I see how different photographers worked and how a production came together, I also have insight into how ad agencies work.
Cultural Influences: Many different things. To name a few: sport, mid-century modern architecture, hip-hop, inspired people, great food, Denmark and wilderness.
Environment: It changes every day, which I really enjoy. I'm fortunate enough to work both on location and in studio, in many different parts of the country. For any given shoot, I like the environment to be conducive to the concept of the shoot. Sometimes that means creating a party atmosphere by having a DJ on set spinning records, other times it's the complete opposite of that. Above all, working with smart, creative and happy people is key.
Philosophy: My approach to photography is heavily influenced by my time spent as an art director. I'm motivated by the concept of a project—what needs to be conveyed—and enjoy the problem solving that entails. I've been fortunate to have a great start with sports-related photography. In addition, I've recently started to shoot projects outside of sport. It's all been a lot of fun.
