“In a short story by Timmy Reed, a man watches his relationship fall apart in a world where humans don’t have hearts anymore. I wanted to emphasize the distance growing between the narrator and the woman he loves. Her stare is meant for the narrator, but is directed at the reader. The cold hues evoke the sensation of emptiness and loss. The heart here symbolizes a dying love, but, as in the story, it also portrays a society alienated by superficiality.”
